Elements to humours
In Siddha, the five elements that make up the universe combine to form the three humours that govern the body. Health is their balance; disease is their disturbance.
Hover or tap a humour to see the elements it is made of.

நீர்க்குறி & நெய்க்குறி
The oil drop test
Neerkuri examines the urine's colour, smell, froth, density and deposits. Neikuri is unique to Siddha: a drop of gingelly (sesame) oil is placed on the urine sample and the way it spreads is read.

Neerkuri and neikuri are part of the eight-fold examination (எண்வகைத் தேர்வு) described on the main page.
Section 05
அறுசுவை & பருவகாலம்
Taste, food & season
| Tamil | Taste | Elements |
|---|---|---|
| இனிப்பு Inippu | Sweet | Earth + Water |
| புளிப்பு Pulippu | Sour | Earth + Fire |
| உப்பு Uppu | Salt | Water + Fire |
| கார்ப்பு Kaarppu | Pungent | Fire + Air |
| கைப்பு Kaippu | Bitter | Air + Ether |
| துவர்ப்பு Thuvarppu | Astringent | Earth + Air |
Because each taste carries elements, food directly strengthens or calms the humours. This is why diet is medicine in Siddha.
The six seasons (பெரும்பொழுது)
- Kaar — Rainy, Aavani · Purattasi
- Koothir — Autumn / cold, Aippasi · Karthigai
- Munpani — Early dew, Margazhi · Thai
- Pinpani — Late dew, Maasi · Panguni
- Ilavenil — Early summer, Chithirai · Vaikasi
- Muthuvenil — Late summer, Aani · Aadi
Each humour naturally accumulates and aggravates in particular seasons, so diet and daily routine shift through the year.
பத்தியம்
Pathiyam
Dietary rules followed during treatment so that the medicine works properly — certain foods are taken, others avoided, as advised by the practitioner.
Section 06
மருந்து
The Siddha pharmacy
Siddha classifies 32 internal medicine forms (அகமருந்து) and 32 external therapies (புறமருந்து). A few common forms:
| Tamil | Name | What it is | Traditional shelf life |
|---|---|---|---|
| குடிநீர் | Kudineer | Herbal decoction | Used fresh (about 3 hours) |
| சூரணம் | Chooranam | Fine herbal powder | About 3 months |
| இளகம் / லேகியம் | Legiyam | Herbal confection | About 6 months |
| பற்பம் | Parpam | Calcined mineral / herbal preparation | Traditionally very long-lasting |
| செந்தூரம் | Chenduram | Red-coloured mineral preparation | Traditionally very long-lasting |
Section 07
சித்தம் → சித்தர்
The origin of Siddhar
Where the name comes from — and why the mastered mind, not the medicine, is the starting point.
சித்தம் (cittam) + -ar (plural) → சித்தர் (cittar)
“Those of the mind” — just as aṟivu (knowledge) gives aṟivar, the wise, and pulam (learning) gives pulavar, the poet.
The word Siddhar (சித்தர், cittar) comes from cittam (சித்தம்), the Tamil word for the inner mind: consciousness and will. Adding the Tamil plural suffix -ar to cittam gives cittar, “those of the mind,” just as aṟivu (knowledge) gives aṟivar (the wise) and pulam (learning) gives pulavar (the poet).
Tamil thought counts cittam as the deepest of the four inner faculties, the seat of memory and of the impressions that shape a person. To master cittam is to see into the roots of one's own nature. This is the insight the Siddhars attained.
That mastery gave them extraordinary power. The Siddhars were known for miraculous abilities and immense inner energy: command over the body, healing, alchemy and power over nature. These powers did not come from outside. They flowed from a mind fully mastered. The Siddhars rejected temples, idols, caste and empty ritual, and looked within for truth and strength.
Their art of pulse reading, நாடி பார்த்தல் (nāṭi pārttal), shows this power most clearly. By touching the wrist, a Siddhar could read the balance of the three vital forces — Vali, Azhal and Aiyam — and know the state of the whole body. Such fine perception is not learned from books alone. It grows from a mind made still and sharp through mastery of cittam, a mind able to sense what ordinary attention misses.
The Siddhar, then, is the master of cittam — whose mastered mind became a source of great power, and of the medicine that carries their name.

Section 09
பாதுகாப்பான மருத்துவம்
Safe & trusted practice
- • Siddha treatment should be taken under a qualified practitioner holding a BSMS degree (Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery) and registered with the appropriate council.
- • Mineral and metal preparations such as parpam and chenduram must only be used when properly prepared and prescribed; poorly made products can be harmful.
- • Do not stop prescribed medicines without consulting your doctor.
- • Recognised institutions include the Ministry of AYUSH (Govt. of India), the Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS) and the National Institute of Siddha, Chennai.
- • Scientific research on many formulations is ongoing, and evidence is still being built.
